“Since the beginning of this war that Sinwar started on October 7 — we’ve said: Our war is with Hamas, not the people of Gaza. We mean it.” IDF Spokesperson RAdm. Daniel Hagari on the elimination of Yahya Sinwar and our operational goals in Gaza.
Yahya Sinwar was appointed as a Hamas Chief after the death of Ismail Haniyeh, who got killed in Israel attack in Iranian capital Tehran. Also, Sinwar was known as the one of the deadliest masterminds of Oct 7th, 2023, attack on Israel.
From Refugee Camp to Hamas chief
Yahya Sinwar was born in 1962 in a refugee camp in the Gaza town of Khan Younis. He was an early member of Hamas, which was formed in 1987. He eventually led the group's security wing, which worked to purge it of informants for Israel. Israel arrested him in the late 1980s and he admitted to killing 12 suspected collaborators, a role that earned him the nickname “The Butcher of Khan Younis.”
